Cross Stitch Wallet Video Tutorial

While on vacation, I carried a small stitching-on-the-go project with me, and wound up with a way-cool cross-stitched wallet before I returned home. I like it so much, I plan to make some more for gifts.

If the embedded player gives you problems, you can watch the video on YouTube.

Materials List

Fabric: 14-ct Aida, Tropical Blue, from Wichelt
Thread: DMC 971 (orange) and 891 (pink), 3 strands for the cross stitches and French knots, 2 strands of each to make the pearl thread
Snaps: Dritz, size 2/0

Further Resources

Not sure how to do some of the steps in the video? Maybe I can help.

French Knots: We have a French knot tutorial.
Hemstitching: We have a class on hemstitching.
Attaching a Lining: In the Bookmarks 101: Simple, Smart, and Swanky Finishes class, we learn several ways to adhere backings (or linings), including the overcast-stitch method I apply in the video. Note: While the title of the class is “Bookmarks,” the techniques we cover can be applied to all sorts of stitchy doo-dads, like ornaments, fobs, barrettes, keychains, zipper pulls, and so on. I’m seriously considering changing the title to “Stitchy Doo-Dads 101: Simple, Smart, and Swanky Finishes”!
How To Make Pearl Threads: We have a video on how to make pearl threads, all sizes, all fibers, from perfectly normal pearls to wonderfully wonky. Sign up for our mailing list, and it’s yours!

What do you think—will you make a cross stitch wallet…or business-card case…or gift card keeper? I want to know!

Good Job! No promises in the near future if I do it. I like the ideas of testing stuff out.

Testing/playing is taking over my embroidery pursuits more and more.
