The Needlework Nutshell
Membroidery Photo Attachment

Attach photos to needlework with simple corner straps. Straps can be enlarged or placed at varying distances to accommodate photos of any size. Pictures slide in and out for easy changing.
Use the technique to personalize a sampler or larger piece of embroidery. Maybe sign your work with your picture instead of your initials. Or create stand-alone pieces with framed photos.

I used 18-ct. mono canvas and size 8 pearl cotton. Any fabric and fiber will do. The straps are partial crescent stitches (diagram below). The border is a selection of straight, slanted, and crossed canvas stitches. Any border--or none at all--will work.

I resized my photo on the computer with image-editing software then printed on photo paper. Slide the picture under the straps, one corner at a time. Photo paper is flexible and will bend without creasing.
The corner straps hold the photo securely in place until I want to change it.

Each line in the grid is a fabric thread (or pair of threads if stitching over 2). It works on Aida, too, of course.
The needle comes up on odd numbers and goes down on evens. Rotate the fabric or pattern to stitch each corner.
Place the straps as far apart as needed to hold your chosen photo. Enlarge the straps for large photos by starting stitch 1 ten or twenty or however-many threads from the corner instead of six. We use five "wraps" here (stitch 1-2 is a wrap), but you can increase or decrease the number at will or make a full crescent stitch if you don't mind hiding the corners of your photo.
